A deadly train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line built to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We will thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the immediate past president, whose term ended the prior year. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's economic goals for the southern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The building of both train projects was managed by the nation's military, marking a significant expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an accelerated pace, surpassing expectations to be at least partly launched before the end of that administration.
However, this accelerated timeline had also sparked persistent apprehensions over safety standards.
- Sunday's accident was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was suggested while awaiting a comprehensive technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reply, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these national undertakings.
