Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument rests on a serious misinterpretation of the situation. The true challenge facing the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. Over this period, European income per person fell from 76.5% to just 50% of the American figure. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a greater average income than several leading EU nations like France and Italy.

Today, roughly half of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Shortfall: The Core Question

This widening disparity is driven by superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, hundreds of American startups have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital issue: In the race for tomorrow's sectors like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, what is Europe stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the US and China, with Europe starting at a clear disadvantage.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

A number of major factors explain this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The United States has a far deeper and agile system for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided regulation hinder Europe. A US startup can launch a service under a single regulatory framework to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often considered a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these hurdles, there are causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have started to advance substantial change. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the need for major reforms.

With the right incentives and rule changes, these assets could support much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe retains significant strengths: skilled workforce, top-tier schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now stands at a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, if it fails to take decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in global economic relevance.
