New research suggests that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using these treatments need to be cognizant of the danger of rapid rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a return to original mass within about 18 months.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors propose the mechanism of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates hunger.
"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and could reduce sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making binge eating a significant risk."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals contend that, given the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "underscore the chronic character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
Patient Testimonies
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit modifications during treatment.
Growing Adoption
Figures show that millions of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women than men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle changes.
