Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the right to contest particular calls made by the chair umpire, mirroring the practice currently in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are staging singles contests.

This development arrives only a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific situations, including:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot touched an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can request.

Practical Application

A recent incident took place in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but believed his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

Video reviews aren't new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at all of its events.

Additional Innovations

Another change at The Championships 2025 involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

In other news, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also announced an increase in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
